Meet the Team
Offploy prides itself on being a commercially responsible social enterprise. This means that whilst we are a community interest company and our sole purpose is to support people with convictions into employment we will do this with the lowest possible impact to the public purse. Our team ensures our activities continue to be of benefit to both our candidates and society.
I am currently studying a degree in criminology and I joined Offploy in September 2018. I have had various roles volunteering and utilising my skills, but the best decision I made was to start volunteering with Offploy.
After growing up in the care system, I know first hand what it is like to have a “label” attached to you such as “care leaver” or “criminal”. The stigma that is attached to these labels is demoralising and I have had my own experience of the criminal justice system. At the age of 15 I faced a judge in Hull Crown Court for affray. At this time, I was living in a hostel with 16-26 year olds with problems ranging from alcoholism to drug addictions, whilst completing my GCSE’s at school. Thankfully, I passed my GCSE’s however my problems did not stop there as I had further appearances at court.
Volunteering as a Social Employment Advisor gave me the relevant experience to mentor candidates for Offploy, as I could use my life experience to overcome any barriers and show people that happiness and success is achievable. I believe that Offploy can make a significant impact on breaking the stigma and reduce reoffending by successfully placing people with criminal convictions into sustainable, meaningful employment. My new role involves managing the volunteers in Hull and Huddersfield, delivering training, and recruiting new volunteers. Whilst my role has changed, I love the company I work for because of how passionate all the staff are about making an impact and change. Offploy has given me the confidence to attend meetings, go into colleges and universities to speak to students, and meet with potential volunteers.
